You’ve probably heard that your haircut style should be based upon your own facial shape, but there’s more to it than that. It’s not just your face’s shape, but your features, how your hair “lays” and frames your face, what necklaces you wear, what earrings or makeup you wear, and so on. All of these things can change how a particular hairstyle is going to look on you. Nonetheless, how your face looks is one good place to start.
Take your eyes, for example. If they are “placed” above the center of the front of your head (measure from the hairline to your chin, and then divide that distance in half), you’ll need an inch of height added to your hairstyle for every inch your eyes occur “above” the center of your face. So, if your eyes are a quarter of an inch above the center of your face as measured, add a quarter of its height to your hairdo to balance the distance.
You can also use your own hair styles and color as a sort of tool to determine what’s going to look best on you before you get it cut. Take some egg whites and massage them into wet hair. With egg whites “lathered” into your hair this way, start to manipulate your hair to see what will look best on you.
First, comb hair back with no part in see if your face looks too “long.” Still without using a part, begin at the very, very front of the hairline and continually comb hair down till it falls over your forehead. Make sure you keep the top and sides slicked back as you do this. Then, try it with the top and sides “poofed” out for another look.
Next, try parting your hair directly down the center and comb the hair directly down on either side.
You can also try parting your hair on either side, trying first one-side and then the other. Try parting the hair at different degrees, from very far over to the left or right to a part that approaches the middle a bit more. See how each looks on you. Because your hair is stiff with the egg whites, you can also try giving your hair “height” to see how a fuller style looks on you.
When you’ve played with your hair in this way to see what different hair “positions” look like on you, you should be able to see how your hair makes your face look depending on style. And therefore, you’ll be able to tell what looks best on you.
However, don’t take too much time thinking about the shape of your face. Beauty comes in lots of different shapes and sizes, so most of what you’re going to have to worry about comes from within you. Whenever you can, keep a pleasant expression on your face, which will only make you look more attractive. Be alert, interested in other people, and friendly as appropriate.
Beyond that, though, an attractive hairstyle and temporary color can certainly make you look and feel better, so playing with your hair the above manner should help you figure out what particular types of hairstyles suit you best.
