Help your Hair Survive the Winter

Winter takes its toll on our minds and bodies. We get more tired than in the summer months, and even depressed. Many people put on weight from eating more in the cold weather. The cold weather damages our skin. Winter also damages the hair, the constant exposure to cold extremes outside and hot dry air inside causes follicle damage. Rain and wind can also damage your hair if overexposure occurs.

With fewer social events on the calendar, many people cut down on visits to the hairdresser during winter. This can cause damage to your hair for several reasons. If your hair has become dry or brittle, the hairdresser will see the warning signs before you do. They can combat the problem early with treatments. Cutting and colouring your hair regularly also protects it. Regular cuts every six to eight weeks reduces split ends and ultimately prevents breakage. When you colour your hair, the colour forms a protective coating around the follicle, giving you extra protection from the elements. Dark colour in particular helps protect your hair, as it does not contain harsh chemicals like peroxide.

In winter, most people generally wash their hair less. In cooler weather the hair produces less oils, leaving the hair less greasy. Also, we are less likely to sweat. The oil produced actually protects and nourishes hair. In winter there is actually more reason to regularly wash our hair, without the natural oils, we need to replenish out hair with conditioner.

While your hair dresser will likely use conditioning treatments, it is also important to regularly put a leave in conditioner yourself at home. Depending on how dry or oily your hair is, you may like to do this once or even twice a week. There are some great conditioners on the market, some only need be left in the hair a few minutes to work wonders.

While in summer colour tends to fade more quickly from exposure to the sun, it still fades in winter. We tend to expose our hair to hairdryers and straighteners more often in winter, which dries out the hair and causes fade. Getting colour in your hair more often will stop it drying out and protect it from further damage.

Extensions need extra care in winter. Hair extensions are far more prone to becoming dry and brittle if they are neglected. Make sure you brush your extensions daily, and use a leave in conditioner at least twice a week.
