Hair Structure and Various Hair Extensions Available Today

Hair structure and various hairs available today

Hair extensions can dramatically improve your appearance. However, before you take the plunge and go in for hair extensions it would help to understand the quality of hair extensions and what the typical structure of hair is like.

The hair structure

The hair when observed on a microscopic level is actually composed of various layers. The outer coating is known as ‘cuticle’ and comprises many long cells which overlap with one another. They align in a unidirectional manner and is the main component that keeps the moisture in the hair intact. It also guards against the weather and other elements. In fact, shiny hair is a sign of having a healthy cuticle.

How to determine an extension’s quality?

The best way to gauge the quality of a hair extension is by assessing the cuticle. Usually, prices can also be an indicator of the overall quality. The more the price of the extension the more will be the quality and vice versa. Also, if the layers of the cuticle are intact and facing the same direction it means it is a healthy cuticle and so the price of the hair extension will also be higher. Bad quality cuticles indicate interlocking cells which can cause matted and knotted hair.

Types of hair and their structure differences

The hair used in the extension industry can originate from various countries. Each ethnic race has a different hair structure. Here we discuss some of them:

European hair:

This type is very thin and has a cross section surface that looks oval. Usually this kind of hair is preferred for all hair extension purposes.

Indian hair:

This is a very high quality hair type and is highly preferred for extension manufacturing purposes. Different hair kinds are mixed and collected for this purpose. However, very rarely is the cuticle left intact (except in very expensive extensions). Usually the cuticle is removed and coated with silicon substances. The prices of these extensions are hence much lesser.

Asian hair:

Most of the time Asian hair types come from Chinese people. It is thicker when compared to the European hair varieties and has a cross section resembling a round shape. Since the hair is originally very thick it is made lighter with an acid bath.

Remi hair:

This is one of the most expensive varieties of hair extensions and uses high grade hair with cuticle cells in a unidirectional growth (the hair we supply).

Synthetic hair:

This is a man made variety of hair which looks and feels like natural hair. Since it is made with artificial materials and the outer cuticle cells are unlike natural hair merging such hair extensions with your natural hair is very tough. Usually, the aftercare is also different for such types of extensions and the prices are also cheaper

Hair Extensions for Beginners

Hair extensions for beginners

Hair extensions can make you look like you have long, beautiful hair. They can also provide dramatic colors to otherwise dull looking hair. However, before you decide to opt for hair extensions here is a guide on selection, tips and risks involved.

Selecting the extensions

First of all, make sure to select an appropriate color of hair extensions. They must ideally match your hair color or be at least a shade as close as possible. Ofcourse, there are exceptions to this rule. Sometimes, you might want a bolder look in which case vibrant colored hair extensions are also available. This way, you can have a dramatic look to your hair. Other than color, you also need to select only the highest grade and quality of hair extensions as these last very long and do not damage easily.

Different techniques used

When it comes to application of hair extensions different techniques are in use. Glues can be used to attach extensions to your hair while non-glue techniques can also be used. There are also weft techniques of applying extensions in which case tracks are used onto which the extensions get attached. Then these wefts are attached to the sections of hair as needed. There are also clip-on extensions which are by far the easiest to use as you can attach these yourself. These extensions, as the name suggests, come with clips using which you can attach them to your hair.

Risks associated with hair extensions

Most hair extension procedures when done professionally in a salon are relatively risk free. However, certain precautions need to be taken when undergoing a hair extension procedure. For instance, proper aftercare and conditioning is critical as is regular washing of the hair. You also need to know that only clip types of extensions can be applied on your own and for all other types of extensions professional assistance is mandatory. You must also stay away from too much heat as it damages the extensions. So that means excessive usage of curling irons or blowdryers.

Pros and cons of using extensions

Just as anything else in life with hair extensions too there are the good and bad sides to it. Let’s look at the bad side first. If you have used the glue attaching method to apply the hair extensions then it can wear off within 3 months of application. Then the extension bonds will begin to weaken therefore will have to be removed. In addition, extensions can cause split ends and damage your real hair. If you wish to grow out your natural hair then think twice before going for an extension as it can damage the natural hair when used extensively. Now comes the good part about hair extensions. They instantly create a whole new look to your hair. You can swap new looks by trying on different textures, styles and colors of extensions. You can also attach beaded or braided extensions to create new looks. It also saves you the hassle of actually growing out your natural hair while seeing how long hair looks on you.

Different Methods of Hair Extensions

Different methods of hair extensions

We all have different ways of coping with our hair and nothing seems to do the job better than hair extensions. To add length and volume or just a change of style… Depending on what kind of look you want accomplished there are various types of hair extensions available in the market. Here we discuss some of them and how you too can incorporate them in your hair.

Strand based hair extensions:

These incorporate a painstaking method of applying each hair extension on small hair sections. This method can be performed either by using heat fusing methods, weaving techniques, metal tube clamping or even using glue. Several hair stylists also prefer using polymers and waxes to attach these hair extensions. Within this technique there are sub-types like glue or bond techniques, non glue techniques etc.

Glue based techniques:

Within this category there are various methods of hair extensions that are used. For example, Remy type of hair extensions, a modulating technique is used whereby an heat connector is used to fuse the extension onto the hair via a keratin wax bond. This technique uses high grade hair for the extensions and removal can only be performed by hair experts. Other techniques include methods such as where low temperatures are used to merge the hair extensions onto the hair. Using a bond made of protein mould it forms a high tensile bond which is safe for the hair.

Non-Glue based techniques:

In these methods no glue is used to attach the hair extensions to the hair. Instead, tubes, micro links, threads, braiding techniques etc. are used to attach the extensions.

Weft extensions:

These are basically tracks on which the hair extensions are affixed. Then, each of these tracks is applied one by one onto the hair. The hair extensions can be attached to the tracks either by hand or with help from a machine. However, hand made is more preferable as it can be customized to individual needs.

Clip-on extensions:

These are very easy to use and can be simply clipped on to the hair whenever needed. These can also be removed by the wearers themselves.
